To Poo or Not to Poo that is the question

To Poo or Not to Poo that is the question

shampoowater

It seems to be a major question at the moment whether to use Shampoo or not to use shampoo.  In reality I think that things have changed so much in the modern world like what we eat, drink and where we live all have a general effect on the quality of our hair.  If you live in the city you are more prone to washing your hair on a daily basis because of the carbon monoxide and pollution in the air.

In most cases the no poo movement does not mean not washing your hair at all.  Maybe a more productive way would be to use natural products as in some of my previous blogs or the main two products people use are Baking Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar.

bsspoon

How to wash your hair the No Poo way;

Take approx 6 tablespoons of baking soda  and mix with approx 10oz of water.  Shake until both the water and soda have mixed properly.  Then rub the mixture into your scalp and hair.  To rinse out just use warm water making sure to remove all the soda from your hair.

 applecider

If you want to condition your hair the No Poo way;

Take approx ½ cup of warm water and mix with 2/3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar.  Rub mixture into your hair starting from the scalp right through to the ends of your hair.  Then wash out with warm water.

So what are the Good and Bad Points

Many people who have abstained from using shampoo say that after a period of time they felt that their hair was healthier, shinier and had less of a frizz.   They would only wash their hair once or twice a week.

Most of the benefits are anecdotal and over a period of time you train your scalp to become less oily.

So what are the benefits?

  1. Natural water
  2. Less washing
  3. No chemicals, better for you and the environment.
  4. Healthier Hair
  5. If required you can use natural products to get that extra boost.
  6. Better Color retention as washing is less frequent and you are not using chemicals to clean your hair.
  7. Cost saving (Not buying Shampoo or Conditioner

hairwash

Disadvantages

  1. Does not work for everyone in particular people with very oily scalp or people who have very fine hair
  2. Can take up to 3 months to train your hair

3          In general because of the long adjustment period you would have to go out or go to work with greasy/oily hair while you get through the transition period. .

  1. Different Hair has different needs
  2. One of the first steps in the No Poo method is using baking soda and water, which can lead to your scalp becoming dry and itchy.
  3. If you are making your own solutions, travel by air can be a problem due to the strict guidelines on liquids.
  4. If you do an internet search you will see that some people say it leaves their hair greasier and others say that the PH Level in Baking soda has left their hair weaker to the point of breakage.

In general its very controversial, people say its great and others say the opposite, the only person that can really judge the effects is you.

I would really love to hear from you guys as any feedback is welcome.

PONYTAILS

PONYTAILS

HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT PONYTAIL

 pony1

Ponytails are a perfect  way to keep your hair in place, it’s one of those  hairstyles that can be put together in minutes and have a very desirable effect.  There are numerous types of ponytails so I am putting together 2 fairly simple styles that can be used casually or for any event, party or for the professional look.  One thing is for sure they all look absolutely fabulous.

Some useful tips to know when using a pony

  1. As with most styles you should always shampoo your hair first
  2. Straight hair normally looks best, but a few waves can also give a nice modern look.
  3. Never use elastic bands that are not made for the job.
  4. To help stop hair bags forming under your ponytail, hold your head back when pulling your hair when fixing the elastic

High Ponytails.

A high ponytail is a wonderful way to give yourself a face lift as it puts tension on your cheekbones.

How to apply

  1. Place your fingers at the crown of your head.
  2. Collect a large section of your hair.
  3. Lightly brush
  4. Now put your hair into a ponytail using an elastic or _____and to make it look more effective wrap a strand or two of your hair around the elastic.
  5. You can finish off by using a small amount of hairspray on the back and sides of your gorgeous locks.

ponytail-2

  Low Ponytail:

The low ponytail has  a tendency to look more professional and sophisticated, but it can also look modern.

  1. Part your hair in the middle or the side if you prefer.
  2. Gently give your hair a deep brushing.
  3. Any stray hairs should be tucked behind the ears and a gentle spray of hairspray to keep in place.
  4. keeping your hair close to your head, pulling it right back.
  5. Then at the nape of your neck secure it with a rubber band.
  6. Finish off by using hairspray all over your hair.

Remember Ladies the ponytail is not just a hairstyle for a bad day it is a simple and effective hairstyle for all occasions.

Bob Hairstyle for Round Faces

Bob Hairstyle for Round Faces

Finding the perfect cut for your face

One of the things that I take into consideration before I style a client’s hair is the shape of their face.  To me this is one of the major factors of getting the hairstyle right and making you look absolutely fabulous.

Round faces are naturally symmetrical so the whole idea is to try introducing a haircut that will break this up while still showing off the natural beauty features of your face.  My recommendation for this is the Bob, a nice simple cut but the effects are amazing.  Here are a number of different styles, each with a little twist to help you look a million dollars.

 1.  A round face has natural curves so a bob with straight lines or a slight wave helps to eliminate this and with a simple side parting and slightly covering the face makes the face look slimmer. Adding blond highlights reflects the light onto the face which again helps to make the face appear more oval.

  1. Another great bob you can use is the chin length straight haircut. This counteracts against the curves and is very popular at the moment.  Simply by parting slightly off center and the slight curve of the hairline counteracts against the forehead and cheeks giving a nice balance to your features.

There are huge variations of the bob to suit everyone from short to long, blond to red and it is not just for adults but looks fantastic on children of all ages too

Bald Today, Hair Tomorrow, My Hair Transplant Experience. Part 1

Bald Today, Hair Tomorrow, My Hair Transplant Experience. Part 1

11951860_424132051121847_9179821485993489606_n

As a hairdresser the pride I have in my hair and the joy I get in styling it is hard to explain, so when I began losing my hair at a young age (32) I started doing all I could in the hope to save what represented me. I used everything I could get my hands on but inevitably reality set in over the years and in addition with my stressful life and busy schedule my hair was nothing but a patchy mess on top of my head. Some people may think I’m vain or that this is such a first world problem but to me it matters. Hats became my new vice but underneath it all I wanted to cry when I looked in the mirror and saw my balding head. I knew I needed to do something about it, to regain the confidence I once had and most of all for myself as a hairdresser, I needed to take care of me.

IMG-20160724-WA0012

It was at that moment I pushed myself into contacting Dr. Robert Jones for my hair transplant. I had found Dr. Jones online and it was his glowing 5-star reviews that grabbed my attention. As this was something I have never ever done before I was quite nervous but he was more than willing to discuss the entire procedure with me over the phone and answer any of my stupid or not-so-stupid questions. Dr. Jones himself had a hair transplant years ago and that was what instantly made me feel comfortable – speaking to someone who has gone through exactly what I will. A few emails and nervous phone calls later I had booked myself in for the end of July 2016 for a full 3000 Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) graft – something Dr. Jones is an expert on (find out more about FUE here).

The day of the procedure I rocked up to his clinic in my white jeans with knots in my stomach and a trendy hat on my head.  I was instantly greeted by his friendly staff and although I wanted to vomit they assured me that I could watch Netflix and chill (literally) and took my order for my lunch. I was gowned up, prepped by the nurses and finally met Dr. Jones in the flesh. He assured me I wouldn’t feel anything except the initial syringe which would administer the anesthetic. I was wide awake during the entire thing and once the first needle went in I was happy to lie there and let them do their thing. At one point I was so comfortable I fell asleep!! For lunch they gave me 30 mins break from the 10 hour procedure I had a delicious roast chicken with fries and then we went back to it and I turned on Netflix. The whole day flew by and I was made feel extremely welcome and relaxed even with my initial reservations.case3-940x700

The general maintenance following a hair transplant is not too difficult; watch for significant bleeding and bathe your head in a bath twice a day. For someone like me with a busy schedule I will admit I went back to work too quick, I should have taken more time off. My head was killing me at times but I don’t think I helped myself. Dr. Jones was on speed dial and literally texted me to follow up and see how I was. Any question I had I just flew off a text or rang to ask, he was so accommodating and I believe he does this with each of his patients.

unnamed

With the weeks that followed my head cleared up and I got excited at the thought of my beautiful, bountiful hair on my head again. It’ll be a long wait as it takes 6 months to a year to see initial and full regrowth but I know it will be worth it. I’ve already booked my next transplant for the back of my head and I am going to do it all over again (1500 grafts)  – this time I’ll be sure to take the time off work in between!

Check out the links below for more info on Dr. Jones and what he does and watch this space for my next update, hopefully by then I’ll be posting pictures of me with brand new hair!

Let’s look at the many benefits of Tomatoes for your hair

Let’s look at the many benefits of Tomatoes for your hair

Tomato1

You might ask why would I use tomatoes in my hair?  Well tomatoes contain numerous vitamins and minerals that are great for the health of your hair.  (A lot of shampoos and conditioners contain extracts from the tomato) They contain Vitamins A, B, C,E and K.  They also contain Minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus and Zinc, Here are eight reasons why you should use tomato in your hair.

  1. Tomatoes are a fabulous conditioner as they help to add shine and makes your hair soft and manageable.
  2. Tomato Hair Rinse is a great way to remove excess build up from the scalp. Remove the skin and seeds from 3 tomatoes, squeeze the juice into a bowl and then apply to your scalp and hair.  Leave for approximately 1 hour and then wash out.
  1. Tomato pulp applied to the scalp is considered a good way to prevent hair loss.
  2. By applying a small amount of tomato oil to your hair will keep your hair manageable and frizz free.

Tomato Puree

  1. If you suffer from dry hair, Tomato puree contains a high amount of protein and by applying tomato puree to your hair, will give it radiance and elasticity. The best way to do this is to mix a small drop of oil with puree and apply to your hair.  Leave for about 30 minutes and then wash out.  This will leave your hair soft, flexible and shiny.
  2. Is your hair strands very brittle and dry, this can be caused by the loss of moisture from your scalp, tomato helps to prevent this by helping to lock in the moisture preventing your hair from becoming dry and brittle.
  3. If you have itchy scalp and or dandruff, tomato contains vitamin C, which helps you to fight dandruff and provides collagen for tissue development. So to apply Take 2 to 3 ripe tomatoes and make a thick pulp of it  add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to the blend and form a smooth paste. Massage the mix gently on the scalp and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with water and let it dry.
  1. Tomato juice also acts as a great soaking agent which helps to remove odours. Apply freshly squeezed tomato juice on the scalp and massage into your hair and leave for 30/40 minutes and then wash out as normal.

Tomato2

It just goes to show sometimes the most simple of products can be the best.

Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

Mayonnaise Hair Treatment

Have you ever tried using mayonnaise on your hair?

Mayo1

If you want softer, fuller hair with that extra shine then mayonnaise is the perfect product for you.  You can use store bought mayonnaise or you can make your own.  I prefer to make my own as you can add your own little touch by adding some extra ingredients.

How to make your own mayonnaise

MayoMix

Blend 3-4 Egg yolks, 2 Tbsp. of lemon juice, 1 Tsp. Vinegar or apple cider vinegar, ⅔ cup of olive oil and or ⅔ cup of warmed coconut oil

You can personalise your mayo by adding some honey, avocado or almond oil

For best results;

Apply to damp hair as you would use a conditioner, making sure to pay particular attention to the ends of your hair trying to avoid the roots

Put on a shower cap and leave for about 25-35 minutes

Rinse out using a gentle shampoo

I would recommend using this once a month
